After choosing the next prime minister, BJP leaders and MLA governor PS Sreedharan Pillai met in the Raj Bhavan to claim the formation of the new government.
The BJP on Monday ended tensions over the name of Goa’s next prime minister and elected Pramod Sawant for a second consecutive term in office. The announcement, which came 11 days after the BJP won the Assembly polls in Goa, dashed the hopes of former health minister Vishwajit Rane, who was a forerunner for the top post.
The BJP won 20 seats in the 40-member House and was backed by two MLA’s from the MGP and three Independents.
Sawant’s name for the top office was cleared that evening at a meeting of newly elected BJP MLAs and senior party leaders in Panaji. The meeting was also attended by BJP central observers Narendra Singh Tomar and L Murugan, parliamentary election responsible Devendra Fadnavis and the party’s state unit president Sadanand Shet Tanavade.
“I would like to thank PM Narendra Modi and Union HM Amit Shah for giving me the opportunity to work as CM of Goa for the next 5 years. I am glad that the people of Goa have accepted me. I will do everything possible to work for the development of the state,” Sawant said.
After choosing the next prime minister, BJP leaders and MLA governor PS Sreedharan Pillai met in the Raj Bhavan to claim the formation of the new government.
Tomar said MLA suggested Sawant’s name to Vishwajit Rane as the leader of the BJP legislative party. His proposal was supported by other MLAs, including Mauvin Godinho and Rohan Khaunte. Tomar said Sawant’s election was unanimous.
