The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will expand its activities to promote its various quality standards through engagement organizations and NGOs.

As part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav ‘Iconic Week’ celebrations, a webinar was organized at BIS headquarters on ‘Involvement of consumer organizations and NGOs in activities promoting BIS standards’, an official statement said.

During the webinar inauguration, Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General of BIS, explained about the emergence of consumer movements in different parts of the world and the important role it played in improving the quality ecosystem.

He also emphasized the role of consumer organizations and NGOs in developing standards and how they act as a bridge between government, regulators and ordinary consumers.

“Tiwari also explained the need to step up BIS’s Standards Promotion activities,” the statement said.

During the webinar, participants were informed about the recent BIS guidelines for the involvement of consumer organizations and NGOs in the work of standard promotion activities, including the establishment and operation of standard clubs, awareness programs and door-to-door campaigns.

The Consumer Engagement Portal recently developed by BIS was also demonstrated to the participants.

Features include easy registration of consumer organizations and NGOs with BIS using their unique NGO Darpan ID and PAN card number.

The processes for viewing the guidelines issued by BIS, cooperation programs offered by BIS and submitting proposals by COs/NGOs were also demonstrated.

Consumer organizations and NGOs took an active part and welcomed this initiative by BIS. They also indicated that they look forward to working with BIS to spread the message of standards and quality across the country.
