As the number of coronavirus cases began to decline significantly, the national carrier resumed most of its services previously suspended due to the Covid-19 situation in the country.

Travelers who commute on the Central Railways have to wait another two months for the linen service. Indian Railways had last week issued orders to resume service to provide linen, blankets and curtains on all trains, a provision that was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it will be another two months before linen service resumes, as the automatic washing machines, which have been out of service for over two years, will need some repair and maintenance to get them running smoothly again.

Officials have said it could even take a little more than two months to restart services, IE reported. “The linen, which has not been used for two years, must be disinfected and washed before being offered on the trains,” an official said. Indian Railways had said 100 percent freshly laundered linen will be provided to train passengers in sealed packages as per the instructions.

In an effort to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the railways had announced in 2020 that it would not provide blankets and curtains to commuters in air-conditioned carriages on all trains. Although free bedding and linen had been discontinued, the Indian Railways had provided a set of bed linen to people who would be interested in purchasing them. The service was made available on an as-needed basis and some sheets were kept for emergencies. Passengers were advised to bring their own blankets on long journeys. It had also instructed that the minimum temperature in railway carriages be set at 24-25 degrees Celsius as a precaution.

As the number of coronavirus cases began to decline significantly, the national carrier resumed most of its services previously suspended due to the Covid-19 situation in the country. Concessions on passenger tickets are said to remain suspended.
