KOLKATA: Hundreds of concerned fans of the ailing Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan performed a yagna here today to pray for his speedy recovery.

“We use the auspicious opportunity of Maha Shivratri to pray to Lord Shiva to help him recover painlessly from his health problems,” Sourav Banerjee of Amitabh Bachchan Fans Association of Kolkata told me.

Dressed in traditional attire, hundreds of fans flocked to Ekdaliya Evergreen Park carrying the actor’s posters in the afternoon for the one-hour yagna.

Ever since the news of Big B’s health problems broke, his admirers here, who also built a temple for him in southern Kolkata, have been concerned.

“Since then, we have prayed for his health and well-being and are constantly following media reports about his health,” Banerjee said.

Another fan blamed the actor’s “workaholic nature” for his medical condition.

“He has delivered hit after hit throughout his career and at this age of his life his body needs a rest,” said Goutam Basak, 32, adding that they are planning a gala when the superstar comes home from the hospital.

On February 11, Bachchan, 69, underwent abdominal surgery, but after complaining of acute pain, his hospital stay had to be extended.

Currently recovering at Seven Hills Hospital, Big B’s health is now said to improve.
