Debashish Panda took charge on Tuesday as chairman of the Insurance Regulatory Authority of India (IRDAI) at its Delhi office. Panda, who is an IAS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre in 1987, retired as the Secretary for Financial Services in January and was given the responsibility of leading IRDAI for the next 3 years from May 2021 upon completion of Dr. Subhash Chandra Khuntia.

The position of IRDAI chairman became vacant and as a result certain policy decisions in the insurance sector were suspended.

Panda started his career in 1985 as AAO (Assistant Administrative Assistant) through Direct Recruitment in New India Assurance and now the insurance industry has high expectations of him.

New Indian in IRDAIA

In IRDAI, many officers in the top positions are ex New India Assurance officers. Aside from Chairman Panda, TL Alamelu, who has been the most senior at IRDAI for the past 10 months, joined The New India Assurance in 1983 as a Direct Recruit Officer.

From October 2016 to June 2017, TL Alamelu held the position of General Manager and Director at New India Assurance, since July 2019 she has held the position of Non-Life Member at IRDAI.

SN Rajeshwari, Member Distribution of IRDAI, has also worked in New India Assurance as General Manager & CFO from 2012 to 2019.

Suresh Mathur, who holds the position of Executive Director at IRDAI, also joined New India Assurance in 1987 and IRDAI’s General Manager Yagnapriya Bharath also started her career as a Direct Recruit Officer in New India Assurance in the year 1986.
