“We are monitoring it closely. The world is watching closely and our national security adviser was clear. There will be consequences if they violate our sanctions,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in response to a question on Tuesday.

The decisions China makes regarding Russia will be watched by the world, the White House has said, amid reports that Beijing is trying to aid Moscow militarily or economically in its war against Ukraine.

“We are monitoring it closely. The world is watching closely and our national security adviser was clear. There will be consequences if they violate our sanctions,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in response to a question on Tuesday.

“The decisions China makes will be watched by the world. But in terms of possible effects or consequences, we’re leaving that to private diplomatic channels at this point,” Psaki told reporters during her daily press conference. She was asked what qualifies to help Russia evade sanctions when it comes to China.

“During the lengthy conversation our national security adviser had with his counterpart, he reiterated our one-China policy based on the Taiwan Relations Act, three communiqués and six pledges, and underlined his concern about Beijing’s coercive and provocative actions in Taiwan Strait, that’s our stance in public, of course, but it’s also something he took the time to reiterate during this conversation,” Psaki said.

“There are, of course, some sanctions that we have put in place. And of course we check if there is a violation. And we also look at whether support is provided for the military invasion of another country. I have no assessment of that today,” she said in response to the question.

As to what measures would be on the table if China were to help Russia militarily or economically in the war, Psaki said the US will conduct those talks directly with China and China’s leaders, not through the media at this point in time.

“I note that when our national security adviser had his meeting yesterday, he was very direct about the consequences. He made it clear that we would be watching closely, made it clear that we are not alone. The decisions China makes will be watched by the world,” Psaki said.
