Ankit Sharma was found dead in a drain near his home in February 2020 in the riot-ridden Chand Bagh area of northeast Delhi. In March 2021, the Delhi government had announced that it would give his brother a government job.

The riots broke out on February 24, 2020, after clashes between supporters of the Citizenship Amendment Act and those who opposed it escalated. At least 53 people were killed and about 200 were injured in the violence.

Later in the evening, Kejriwal targeted the BJP for not helping the next of kin. “BJP people played dirty politics over the death of Ankit Sharma and then abandoned his family. We did not do politics with them (Ankit’s family). We kept in constant touch with the family and helped them at every turn,” he said in another tweet.

In a statement, the Delhi government said Kejriwal has fulfilled his promise to give Ankit Sharma’s family a job in the government. “The government of Kejriwal appoints Ankur Sharma as a ‘junior assistant’ in the Ministry of Education,” the statement said.

The prime minister also met the family of the murdered intelligence agency officer on Thursday. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who has the education portfolio, was also present at the meeting, it said.

Kejriwal encouraged Ankur Sharma to take up the offer and join the department as soon as possible. He wished him luck, the statement said.

Earlier in the day, Sisodia also tweeted that Ankur Sharma was handed the job certificate by Kejriwal. Meanwhile, Ankur Sharma said the Delhi government has supported his family every step of the way since his brother’s death, the statement said.

“The CM has helped us financially. Today I was offered a government job in the government of Delhi by the CM,” the statement quoted Ankur Sharma as saying.

Ankit Sharma’s mother also thanked the government of Delhi and Kejriwal for supporting her family.
