However, a senior ministry official said the registration process will continue even after all 380 million employees have joined the portal, as anyone over the age of 16 is eligible to register on the portal.

The Ministry of Labor already has about 270 million unorganized sector workers on the e-Shram portal launched on August 26 and hopes to have all an estimated 380 million on board by March 2023. The Aadhaar seeded centralized database is mainly created to provide all future Social Security benefits from the Center and the states that are intended for such workers.

However, a senior ministry official said the registration process will continue even after all 380 million employees have joined the portal, as anyone over the age of 16 is eligible to register on the portal.

“A new generation is coming. Every year new ones are added. So we cannot add an endpoint or a sunset clause to this registration. This registration will continue,” said the official. The Ministry of Labor is the focal point for planning, policy formulation and project implementation at the national level.

All employees between the ages of 16 and 59 who are not members of existing social sector schemes of the ESIC, EPFO or NPS are eligible to register in the e-Shram portal. After registration, those between the ages of 18-59 will get an accidental cover of Rs 2 lakh under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) for the first year free of charge. From the second year, she has to pay an annual premium of Rs 12 to be continuously covered under the insurance scheme.

The database will contain data on name, occupation, address, educational qualification, skill types, family details, etc. to maximize their employability and extend the benefits of social security systems to them. The portal also offers the transferability of benefits to the migrant and construction workers.

More than 400 professions are included and registered under this portal.

Once the portal is ready, it will have the interoperability and connectivity to a database of benefits from other ministries.
