The release of Zaghari-Ratcliffe, and that of Anoosheh Ashoori, another British-Iranian prisoner accused of espionage, came after Iran confirmed the British government paid the £400million – $475million today although Iran says the amount $530 million was – that was owed. Iran’s payment was to the International Military Service (IMS), then a subsidiary of the Ministry of Defense. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said the IMS debt has now been fully repaid and the money has been earmarked for humanitarian purposes – although there is, of course, no way for Britain to know what the regime is doing with it. (Morad Tahbaz, another British citizen, was released from prison on leave but was still held in Iran.)
