Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) and India Japan Lab (IJL) of Keio University, Japan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on March 15, 2022 to cooperate on research projects, develop new certificate courses, joint student counseling, students and faculty exchange visits and joint publication of articles/educational books.
As part of the MoU, IIT Guwahati’s Center for Disaster Management and Research (CDMR) will act as the focal point. CDMR was established at IIT Guwahati in November 2020 and the formal activities of this center started in January 2021.
The MoU was signed between Professor TG Sitharam, Director, IIT Guwahati, and Professor Rajib Shaw, Director, India Japan Lab, Keio University, in the presence of Sudip Mitra, Head of CDMR, IIT Guwahati.
CDMR of IIT Guwahati becomes the partner for various IJL training programs/workshops for the Northeast region. This partnership would pave the way for a closer relationship with Japan, the country known for its expertise in disaster management and developing technologies to mitigate the risks of various types of disasters.
As Sitharam said, the cooperation between Keio University and IIT Guwahati will be not only a technical one, but also a social one. He suggested creating the space for a joint masters program between Keio University and IITG and also mentioned the possible role CDMR and Keio University could play in raising awareness about disaster risk reduction among schoolchildren.
