Reliance Jio Infocomm has announced its decision not to continue its project to install telecom towers in the Gir and Girnar nature reserves, parliament was informed on Wednesday. As informed by the government of Gujarat, Reliance Jio Infocomm had submitted proposals for the construction of 41 mobile towers in Gir and Girnar Nature Reserves.

In response to a question in the Lok Sabha about whether a decision has been made regarding the approval, State Minister for Communications Devusinh Chauhan said in a written response: “As informed by the Government of Gujarat, the Reliance Jio has Infocomm decided not to proceed with the project for the installation of telecommunications towers in the Gir and Girnar Nature Reserves”.

The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change did not issue advice in 2017 on the placement of mobile cell towers in areas with wild animals. However, there is an Aug. 9, 2012 advisory issued by the ministry regarding “the use of mobile towers in a way to minimize their impact on wildlife, including birds and bees,” Chauhan said.
