Manish Tewari said the party had lost 39 out of 49 polls since 2014, adding that the situation calls for a “very deep and immediate operation to stop this ominous drift into oblivion”.

Congressman Manish Tewari has said the party’s defeat in Punjab is a classic example of cutting off the neck and legs at the same time. Tewari, who is part of the G-23 group of dissident leaders demanding organizational renewal, called former Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu a typical loose cannon on the deck of the Punjab Congress. He said those responsible for the appointment of Sidhu should be held accountable.

“Navjot Singh Sidhu, he was the quintessential loose cannon on the deck of the Punjab Congress. Those responsible for his appointment should also be held accountable,” Tewari told the Indian Express. The Anandpur Sahib MP also blamed Harish Rawat for the party’s defeat in Punjab, alleging he misled the leadership, adding that it all started with the specter of the Mallikarjun Kharge committee nomination.

“It all started with the specter of the Mallikarjun Kharge Committee nomination… The person responsible for killing the Congress in Punjab is Harish Rawat. He completely and absolutely misled the leadership regarding what the ground situation was in Punjab,” Tewari claimed, adding that Rawat favored Sidhu for his “completely blinded ambition” to become a face of the Uttarakhand Congress.

Tewari said that while no one expected the Congress party’s defeat in May 2021, the party “committed such harakiri” between May 2021 and February 2022 that the party was “completely destroyed.” The Congress MP also added that the decision to change Captain Amarinder Singh was absolutely wrong and added that anyone who told the Congress leadership that Singh had only 2 percent popularity was telling absolute lies.

Tewari claimed Congress is facing an existential crisis and could be looking at the specter of a ‘Congress-mukt Bharat’ for itself. He said the party had lost 39 out of 49 polls since 2014, adding that the situation calls for a “very deep and immediate operation to stop this ominous drift into oblivion”.
