In the series, which ran from 2015 to 2019, Zelenskiy plays a teacher who unexpectedly becomes president of Ukraine after a video complaining about corruption goes viral. Zelenskiy, 44, is a former actor and comedian who turned to entertainment after receiving a law degree from Kiev Economic University. He was elected president of Ukraine in 2019 in a massive landslide.

Interest in the show began to rise after Russia invaded Ukraine last month and Zelenskiy took to social media, defiantly on the streets of Kiev with MPs calling on citizens to fight. The series was dropped from Netflix in the US, but was available on YouTube.
