The PSU-RailTel, under the Ministry of Railways, said it is close to extending Wi-Fi coverage to all train stations in the country except bus stops.
Indian Railways’ fast and free Wi-Fi internet facility is now available at 6,100 train stations across the country, the PSU-RailTel said Tuesday. According to RailTel, the milestone of 6,100 train stations with fast Wi-Fi coverage was reached on Tuesday with the commissioning of the Wi-Fi facility at Ubarni Railway Station (located in the Rae Bareli district, Uttar Pradesh) in the Lucknow Division of the Northern Railway Zone. The PSU-RailTel, under the Ministry of Railways, said it is close to extending Wi-Fi coverage to all train stations in the country except bus stops. According to a PTI report, of the above 6,100 train stations, more than 5,000 are located in rural areas.
The national carrier’s project to provide free Wi-Fi internet facilities at train stations was foreseen in the Railways Budget of 2015. The fast and free Wi-Fi facility at train stations across the country meets the goals of the ambitious Digital India program of the Modi government. The aim of this initiative is to bridge the digital divide between the rural and urban citizens, increasing the digital footprint in India’s rural villages and improving the user experience.
According to the details on the RailTel website, the Wi-Fi service is free to passengers and users for the first 30 minutes of daily use at a speed of 1 mbps. To use the Wi-Fi facility at higher speed stations further away, the user or passengers must choose a higher speed subscription for a nominal fee. The plans range from Rs 10 per day (for 5 GB at 34 MBPS speed) to Rs 75 per 30 days (for 60 GB at 34 MBPS speed) excluding GST. According to the PSU, a number of payment options, such as internet banking, credit card, and wallet, can be used to purchase a subscription online.
