Sharad Yadav (74) also claimed that the BJP government has been a failure and that people are looking for a strong opposition.

Former Union Minister Sharad Yadav has announced that his party Loktantarik Janata Dal will merge with Rashtriya Janata Dal on March 20 as part of his effort to unite various offshoots of the former Janata Dal.

Kept low for health reasons, Yadav’s decision to merge his party, which could never have made its presence felt since its launch after he parted ways with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U), marks his reunion with Lalu Prasad after more than three decades, with both leaders nearing the end of their political careers.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad had left Janata Dal in 1997 to form his own party over his disagreements with his leadership, while the investigation into the feeding scam, of which he was the prime suspect, gained momentum. Sharad Yadav was then seen as his rival within the Janata Dal, and he later joined Kumar to end RJD’s 15-year reign in Bihar in 2005.

“It is the need of the hour to establish a strong opposition in the country. I have been working in this direction for a long time to unite not only the absent-minded former Janata Dal but other like-minded parties and have therefore decided to merge my party LJD with RJD,” Yadav said on Wednesday.

Sharad Yadav (74) also claimed that the BJP government has been a failure and that people are looking for a strong opposition.

He noted that the Janata Dal alone had 143 seats in Lok Sabha in 1989, and said that the social justice agenda has lost its pace over the years with the party’s breakup, and this needs to be revived, he said.

Sharad Yadav’s daughter had fought the 2020 election in Bihar with an RJD ticket, but lost. The need for this hour is for all like-minded parties to come together to build a strong opposition, Yadav said.
