The swearing-in ceremony of the new BJP government in Goa, where the party has emerged as the largest political force by winning 20 of a total of 40 Assembly seats, will tentatively take place between March 23 and 25, senior party leaders said on Sunday. † Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior BJP leaders will continue to attend the event, they said.
Pramod Sawant, the acting Prime Minister of Goa, said here with reporters that the BJP observers will arrive in the state on Monday, after which the exact date of the swearing-in ceremony will be determined.
The BJP, which has had the support of two Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) MLAs and three Independents, has yet to lay claim to forming the new government in the coastal state, where the poll results were released on March 10.
BJP leaders including Sawant and Goa state unit president Sadanand Shet Tanavade held a meeting at the party office in Panaji on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Tanavade said the exact date of the new government’s swearing in would be announced once party observers arrive here and hold a meeting of BJP’s legislative unit in Goa.
“The swearing in of the new government will take place for the time being between March 23 and 25,” he said, adding that Prime Minister Modi would also attend the event.
Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai was to swear an oath of secrecy to the new prime minister in a grand function planned at Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium in Bambolim, near here, he said.
In response to a question, Tanavade said the announcement about the new prime minister would be made by the central leadership after a meeting with the party’s MLAs.
The formation of the new government in Goa has been put on hold as it should happen with other states, where the BJP has retained power, he added.
Sawant and his party colleague Vishwajit Rane had met Interior Minister Amit Shah on Saturday evening in New Delhi, where party chairman JP Nadda and general secretary BL Santhosh were also present. Along with Sawant, Rane has expressed his desire to occupy the highest post in the state.
