Candidates seeking admission to a PhD must have completed a 1-year or 2-year master’s degree after a 4-year undergraduate degree with a total of 55% minimum grades or the equivalent grade ‘B’ on the UGC 10-point scale.

University Grants Commission (UGC) Amends Revised Regulations for PhD Admission in Draft Called UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations, 2022.

According to the revised standards as stated in the document, to be admitted to the PhD program, candidates must have completed a 1 year or 2 year (4 semester) master’s degree after a 4 year undergraduate degree with 55% minimum marks in total or the equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 10-point scale or an equivalent diploma from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency. In addition, a candidate seeking PhD admission after a bachelor’s degree of 4 years or 8 semesters of research must have a minimum CGPA of 7.5.

Candidates who have obtained M.Phil with at least 55% overall or the equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 10-point scale or equivalent degree from a foreign institution are also eligible for admission. SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/economically weaker section (EWS) and other categories of candidates may be granted a 5% credit easing, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent class easing, based on of a decision of the top body.

In addition, an easing of 0.5 score, which equates to CGPA of 7 or equivalent grade easing, can be given to candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy low) or otherwise suitable,

economically weaker section (EWS) and other categories of candidates according to the decision

from time to time by the committee. The document also stated that all universities will admit a doctoral student through the National Aptitude Test (NET) or the National Admission Test or an admission test conducted at the level of individual universities.

Furthermore, UGC solicited feedback, suggestions and recommendations from all stakeholders by March 31, 2022.
