Western Railway’s Divisional Business Development Units (BDUs) are closely monitored, which has led not only to an improvement in parcel traffic, but also to better freight capabilities in terms of new traffic.

The Western Railway has continuously run special freight and parcel trains to move the supply of essential goods across the country. Western Railway maintains supply chain momentum, operating 835 parcel trains from April 1, 2021 to March 14, 2022. During this period, freight train loading registered 83.29 million tons, compared to 76.65 million tons in the corresponding period of last year, which is about 9% higher. This has resulted in a total revenue of approximately € 10,293 Kr.

According to Sumit Thakur, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, these trains have carried goods weighing more than 3.21 Lakh tons during this period. These goods include agricultural products, medicines, medical equipment, fish, milk, etc. The income generated by this transportation amounts to approx. €114.45 crore.

Western Railway ran 174 Milk Special trains with a payload of approximately 1.25 lakh tons and 100% utilization of the wagons. Similarly, 176 special COVID-19 parcel trains with a payload of approximately 36,000 tons were also operated to carry essential goods. In addition, 298 indented rakes with more than 1 lakh ton were also used with 100% utilization. From April 1, 2021 to March 14, 2022, 187 Kisan Rails with a payload of approximately 52,000 tons were also operated from different divisions. The aim was to help the farmers find new markets for their products and also for their economic and fast transport.
