While it is always an option to make Dhami Uttarakhand’s prime minister, as many party leaders praise him for the BJP’s impressive performance, he will have to win an election within six months to retain the chairman.
The loss of acting Prime Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami from Khatima constituency has placed the Bharatiya Janata party in a difficult position over the choice of the chief ministerial face in Uttarakhand. The BJP entered the polls after swapping two prime ministers. Dhami was the third CM to take the reins after Trivendra Singh Rawat and Tirath Singh Rawat. While the BJP, which went in the polls and presented Dhami as the face of the CM, won the elections, Dhami lost.
While about a dozen MLAs have offered to relinquish their seats for Dhami, the acting CM visited Delhi earlier this week and held meetings with Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President JP Nadda, BJP Secretary organization BL Santosh and Rajya Sabha MP and National Spokesperson Anil Baluni. While it is always an option to make Dhami Uttarakhand’s prime minister, as many party leaders praise him for the BJP’s impressive performance, he will have to win an election within six months to retain the chairman. The concern among the BJP is that they are a bit reluctant to go to a bypoll and maybe go for a different face.
The party reportedly called Kaladhungi MLA and protem speaker Banshidhar Bhagat to Delhi. While Bhagat confirmed that he was visiting Delhi, he called it a personal visit. Bhagat is a senior BJP leader and was elected MLA for the seventh time this election. In 1991 he was elected a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly for the first time from Nainital and held the seat in 1993 and 1996. He also served as Minister of State for Food and Logistics, Minister of Hill Development, Minister of State for Forest in the then government of Uttar Pradesh. He also served as a minister in the government of Uttarakhand after the state was formed in 2000. He won from the Haldwani seat in 2007, from Kaladhungi in 2012, and also held the seat in 2017 and 2022.
While many names are circulating for the position, including ministers from the previous government and some state MPs, the BJP legislative party is likely to meet next week to elect its leader who will be sworn in as prime minister.
Top BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shah, Rajnath Singh and JP Nadda have held extensive talks in recent days to work out the outlines of the new governments in four states, including Uttarakhand. The BJP saw the situation evolve as a result of Dhami’s defeat and in order to soften any dissent regarding the face of CM, as in the previous administration, the BJP has made Rajnath Singh the central observer for Uttarakhand. Clarity is expected early next week about the face of the CM and the cabinet ministers.
