On October 3 last year, eight people were killed in Lakhimpur Kheri amid violence that erupted as farmers protested the visit of Uttar Pradesh, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, to the area. Four farmers were mowed down by an SUV, after which the driver and two BJP workers were lynched by angry farmers. A journalist also died in the violence that sparked outrage among opposition parties and peasant groups agitating about the Center’s now-repealed agricultural laws.
With Mos Home’s son Ashish Ajay Mishra as the main accused in the case, the opposition launched a sharp offensive against the government, accusing it of protecting the minister and his son and being insensitive to the farmers. Ashish Mishra is currently out on bail.
